Obukan
5.0 (40)gym
Founded in 1926, this Portland dojo teaches traditional Kodokan judo and was named by judo's founder, Dr. Jigoro Kano.
Description

Originally operating as the Portland Judo Club, the dojo hosted a tournament in honor of Dr. Jigoro Kano while he toured the States after the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. At a meeting afterward, Kano officially changed the name to Obukan. The title ties the discipline directly to its home: "O" refers to Oregon—called "O-shu" or O-state by Japanese immigrants—while "Bu" means martial training and "Kan" a building or training hall.
