NYC Outdoors Queens Route 7: Playgrounds and Marshland

This Queens route links two active playgrounds with a marshland nature center. The playgrounds bring court games and summer spray showers. At the center, boardwalk trails run out through the wetlands. Everything here is free to enter.

Queens Playgrounds and Marshland

A Pair of Regulation Handball Courts

New York City acquired this property in 1854. Records preserve the former Hard Courts Area name for this compact parcel, which now includes basketball and play areas. The grounds occupy a highway adjacent site along the Horace Harding Expressway service road, between 102 Street and Yellowstone Boulevard. Daily hours run from 6 AM to 9 PM every day, with public access and free entry. Within its 0.87 acres, the site combines documented municipal history with active recreation facilities in a small Queens setting.

Basketball and Handball Facilities

Public restrooms, spray showers, and Wi Fi are documented visitor amenities at this public site. Entry is free, and daily hours run from 6 AM to 9 PM. A separate layer comes from the earlier history of the location. The site held the summer estate of Walter Bowne, a former mayor, until a fire in 1925. That chapter places the property within a longer civic timeline. Today, the property remains active and operational, with those amenities documented alongside its public role in Queens.

Look Beyond the Windmill

Environmental education is part of the public role of the center, alongside marshland trails and open space and waterbody preservation. Resident birds and snakes add a living dimension to the setting, while the animal room is described as open seven days except major holidays. These features define its documented environmental role in Douglaston. Entry is free to the public, and a donation of 5 USD per person is suggested rather than required. Most weekday hours run from 9 AM to half past 4 PM, while most weekend hours run from 9 AM to 1 PM.
