Description

Once an isolated island reached by a sandbar and later a causeway, Nut Island is one of four peninsula parks in the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area. Measuring roughly 150 yards across by a quarter-mile long, the grounds share space with the operational, closed-to-the-public Nut Island Headworks facility alongside gentle trail slopes and benches. Its past surfaces in a monument fashioned from a defective Rodman artillery gun fragment, a relic of the site's mid-1800s testing as a weapons proving ground.
