Description

Sculpted by Irish artist Jerome Connor and dedicated in 1924, the memorial centers on a large bronze bas-relief panel depicting 12 nuns in their religious habits. Flanking the central scene are bronze allegorical figures of the Angel of Patriotism and the Angel of Peace, mounted in granite. Championed by Ellen Ryan Jolly, the monument stands across from St. Matthew’s Cathedral at the intersection of Rhode Island Avenue, M Street, and Connecticut Avenue NW.
