Ninety Minutes From Union Station to the Country Club Plaza

A driver with a microphone takes ninety minutes to show you the parts of Kansas City that do not sit within walking distance of each other. The jazz district, museum row, the Country Club Plaza, the City Market. You watch it go past from a wooden bench with the air conditioning running.

Ride from Union Station to the Country Club Plaza.

Kansas City does not hand itself over on foot. The pieces worth seeing sit in separate districts, and a first-time visitor with one afternoon usually picks one of them and never finds out what the others look like.

This is the version where you pick none of them. A trolley-style coach pulls up in front of Union Station three times a day in season, a guide takes the microphone, and the city arrives at the window for the next ninety minutes.

The inclusions list on the booking record has exactly one line on it: in-vehicle air conditioning. The timed stops in the itinerary add up to nine minutes out of ninety. This is a ride. What you are paying for is the talking.

Departures leave from the plaza in front of Union Station at 10:00 a.m., noon and 2:00 p.m. Booking closes two hours before the departure you pick, and confirmation comes back instantly. A single booking can carry up to thirty travelers, and at least one of them has to be an adult.

What Goes Past the Window

The operator puts the loop at eighteen miles. It hangs on about ten names, and the guide works through them in the order the itinerary lists them.

The World War I museum comes first. Then 18th and Vine, where the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum sits in the historic jazz district. Then Crown Center, where SEA LIFE Kansas City and the Lego attraction next door share a block with what the operator's notes call Hallmark Cards' world headquarters. Then the Country Club Plaza, which gets the longest timed slot in the whole itinerary. After that comes museum row and the grounds of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Power and Light District, the T-Mobile Center beside it, the City Market and the Arabia Steamboat Museum, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, and Westport, which the operator's notes flag as the site of the Battle of Westport.

Four of those points carry a timed duration in the product record: one minute, one minute, two minutes and five minutes. The rest are written up as pass-bys. The operator's own line for the World War I museum is that you see it from the comfort of the trolley, and that is a fair description of the whole ninety minutes.

One Guide, One Microphone, One Option

The commentary is live for the whole ride, and it is the part of the ticket doing the work. The product record names English as the only guide language. A group that would rather listen in something else should know that before booking.

There is one product option on this listing. Infants, children, adults and seniors are all bookable age bands, and the record says infants ride on an adult's lap.

Tickets are mobile or paper, one per booking.

Strollers, Service Animals and One Phone Call

The accessibility notes on this listing are unusually specific. Every line below is quoted from them.

  • All areas and surfaces are wheelchair accessible.
  • Wheelchair passengers must call twenty-four hours in advance.
  • Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller.
  • Infants are required to sit on an adult's lap.
  • Service animals are allowed.
  • Suitable for all physical fitness levels.
  • Public transportation options are available nearby.

Six of those lines are statements. One of them is a task. Read the list before you book for anyone who needs any of it.

The Calendar Closes in Late November

The bookable season runs from 1 March to 27 November, then opens again on 1 March the following year. The calendar carries no departures between 28 November and the end of February. Inside the season the schedule lists all seven days of the week.

If you are here in January, this one is not on the table. Plan it for spring through late autumn.

Across its review sources the product record carries a 4.72 average from 408 ratings. That rating is attached to this product code.

The trolley waits on the plaza in front of Union Station, by the old clock. If the front lot is closed that day, boarding moves to the lower level on the west side of the station, by the Science City playground. Those are two different places at the same address, so arrive with a few spare minutes.

Take the noon departure and you are back on that same plaza by half past one, with the whole afternoon still ahead of you and a much better idea of which neighborhood you want to spend it in.
