Newport Over Lunch: Five Kitchens, From Pirates to Mansions
Lunch at five locally owned Newport restaurants, with the town's story told on the walks in between.
Newport Foodies Stroll turns lunch into a walk through downtown Newport. The group meets at the Wave sculpture on America's Cup Avenue, eats at five locally owned restaurants, and hears the town's history on the stretches between them.
The operator's own booking page introduces Tom and Sue as the guides. Most travelers writing in 2025 and 2026 name one of the two, and a couple name other guides. In the operator's telling, the story starts with Newport's purchase from the Narragansett in 1639 and runs through pirates, the rum that built its early wealth, Irish Newport and the Gilded Age.

The booking listing runs the walk on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 11:30 AM or noon, for about two and a half hours over roughly 1.75 miles. As of October 13, 2026, it prices the walk at USD 123 per adult and USD 75 per child.
Its age bands cover children 8 to 10 and adults 13 to 80, which leaves no slot for an 11- or 12-year-old or anyone under 8, and every child needs an adult on the booking. Sales are final, with no refund for cancellations, though the operator notes on the listing that it handles cancellations case by case. If too few people book, the operator can cancel after confirmation and offer another date or a full refund.

The operator calls the route a walk through Lower Thames Street. The listing's itinerary adds the Armory on Thames, Brown and Howard Wharf, Waite's Wharf with its view across the harbor to Fort Adams, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians hall.
Travelers from 2020 to 2025 describe heading down to the water and then into the Fifth Ward, where the guides cover the neighborhood's Irish immigrant history. Recent travelers put the whole outing at close to three hours, and one in 2025 at three and a half. Several say it took them to a part of Newport they would not have found on their own.
The Gilded Age Chapter Happens by The Elms

The listing places the Gilded Age part of the story in the gardens behind The Elms, which it describes as the Preservation Society mansion built in 1901. Travelers who wrote about that stop in 2022 and 2023 describe something smaller: the gates, or a back entrance by a fountain, with stories about the family who first lived there.
Going by those accounts, plan on hearing about The Elms from its gates rather than walking its gardens. One 2025 traveler advises against booking a mansion tour for the same afternoon.
Five Plates Make a Full Lunch
The operator's six partner restaurants are Vieste for Italian, Cluck House for chicken and comfort food, The Reef on the dock, Beaucoup Café for French pastries, Inpopnito for gourmet popcorn, and O'Brien's Pub, where the walk ends. Each walk visits five of the six. It also says restaurants may change, and the stop names on the booking listing are older than its own list.
Travelers in 2026 report Rhode Island clam chowder, a chicken sandwich, homemade ravioli, a prosecco, and pastry with cappuccino to finish. Travelers describe a real plate at each stop and advise skipping breakfast. Vegetarian, pescatarian, gluten-free and allergy needs can be met with 24 hours' notice to the operator; on the listing, note them in the special requirements box at checkout.
One 2025 reviewer found only the chowder stop specific to Newport, and a 2026 reviewer had hoped for more seafood.
Drinks, Kids and the Cobblestones
The operator's own pages disagree on drinks. Two say the meal includes two alcoholic drinks; its beverage answer promises one drink of your choice at O'Brien's at the end, alcoholic or not, with water at every stop and other drinks for purchase at some restaurants. Plan on the one drink at the pub and budget for anything beyond it. Alcohol goes only to guests 21 and over, and the operator asks everyone to bring a photo ID.
The operator recommends the walk for children 8 and older and says all children are welcome, though the listing's age bands decide who can be booked here. The listing ticks suitable for all physical fitness levels; the operator says the route crosses cobblestones and uneven pavement and that it cannot accommodate wheelchairs.
🧭 Meet at the Wave, a sculpture of a breaking wave on the corner of America's Cup Avenue and Memorial Boulevard, just left of Hammetts Hotel; the guides wear name tags.
The walk runs rain or shine, with water, sunscreen and rain ponchos handed out, and in bad weather the operator may move the start time and tell guests that day. Parking and gratuity are not in the price; the operator points to street parking and two lots beside the meeting corner.
As of October 13, 2026, the booking calendar shows October 14 and 16 left this season and regular dates again from Wednesday, May 5, 2027. A lone noon slot on January 1, 2027 sits outside every season the operator publishes. The operator suggests taking the walk early in a Newport stay, and several travelers went back to one of the restaurants for dinner.
