Description

Located in Lady Bird Johnson Park, the monument was designed by Italian sculptor Ernesto Begni del Piatta and became the first naval memorial in Washington, D.C. upon its construction. It was conceived not solely as a war memorial, but also as a tribute to those who died in storms, shipwrecks, and other maritime disasters while serving in the U.S. Navy and Marine Services.
