National Portrait Gallery's Great Hall Hosts a Free Reading Party

For one evening the museum's third-floor Great Hall turns into a reading room: bring a book, read to curated music, then talk. Nov 12 adds a holiday book swap.

Bring a book and settle in.

📚 A Free Reading Party

🏛️ The Great Hall, Third Floor

The Great Hall sits on the third floor of the Patent Office Building, the Greek Revival block the Portrait Gallery shares with the Smithsonian American Art Museum. This party stays in the Great Hall, not in the glass-roofed Kogod Courtyard: that is where the next one lands on Dec 17.

🔁 Read, Talk, Swap

You do not need to have finished anything, or to follow a set text: bring whatever book you are reading now. The evening runs on silent reading periods, one-on-one breakouts and group discussion about the books everyone brought, with curated music underneath. Nov 12 adds a holiday book swap, so bring a second book if you want to trade one.

🚪 Free, Adult, and You Reserve First

Entry is free, but a seat needs a ticket: reserve on Luma in advance for the 5:15 p.m. start. The museum lists it as an adult program and publishes no age cutoff. Use the G Street or F Street entrance, where every visitor passes through Smithsonian security screening; there is no coat or bag storage, so travel light. The galleries close at 7 p.m. A ticket also means you agree to appear in event photos, and it is not refundable.
