Morning Yoga on Boards Anchored Off Honolulu's Magic Island

Yoga on paddleboards anchored off Magic Island at 9:00 AM, starting on the sand and ending in savasana on the water.

Seventy-five minutes of yoga on a standup paddleboard, at 9:00 AM in the shallow water off Magic Island in Ala Moana Beach Park. Every board is anchored for the full class. Nobody drifts off mid-pose.

The water stays about waist-deep, and a fall ends with your feet on the sandy bottom. The operator says swimming ability is not required. The listing still asks for at least a moderate level of fitness, and the operator asks that guests be comfortable in the water: falling in is always a possibility.

The booking covers the board, paddle and life jacket, plus a professional guide. Gratuities, transport to the beach and photos are not included. Ages start at 8, every booking needs an adult, and travelers under 17 need an adult with them.

What Happens When You Fall In

The operator puts the class less than 100 feet from shore at a lifeguarded beach, in water about waist-deep, and says it runs only when conditions are safe. Its answer to non-swimmers is a plain yes: the water is shallow, and anyone who falls in can stand up on the sand.

Plan on getting wet either way. The boards sit in waist-deep water, and the operator asks for clothes you can stretch in and do not mind soaking. Swimsuits and lycra yoga wear both work.

The operator's FAQ answers people who have never paddleboarded or done yoga with a yes. Instruction comes with variations and modifications for different levels.

Getting to Magic Island Before 9:00 AM

Magic Island is part of Ala Moana Beach Park, 1.5 miles from Waikiki by the operator's count, or a 30 to 45 minute walk. The operator's site calls parking at the beach park free and plentiful, and says spots can fill up quickly on weekends and holidays.

The Ala Moana shopping trolley does not start running until 9:30 AM, and the operator says not to take it to a morning class. It lists the city bus and a rideshare as the other options.

Leave nothing in the car. The operator warns that theft from cars and the beach can be a problem, and keeps a safe spot for keys, a wallet and a phone during class, though it takes no responsibility for losses.

Seventy-Five Minutes, From the Sand to Savasana

Class starts on the beach with safety and the basics of yoga on a board, then moves onto the water. The operator's class page lists sun salutations, standing poses and savasana. The listing describes most poses as seated, kneeling or lying down, with a few standing ones for balance and core, and builds in free time to try poses you want to work on.

The operator's booking system releases ten places for each 9:00 AM class, and the listing caps a shared class at ten.

It closes with savasana: lying on the board, fingers and toes trailing in the water.

Who Runs the Class

Yoga Floats was founded by Kelsey Moore, who came to Hawaii from Canada. Her bio on the operator's About page lists E-RYT 200 and a Red Cross lifeguard qualification. The operator says it holds permits from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the City and County of Honolulu. The listing does not name who teaches a given class.

📍 Meet at the south end of the Magic Island parking lot and look for the white boards in the grass or the Yoga Floats van. The map pin marks Magic Island Lagoon, on the same peninsula as the lot.

Check in 10 to 15 minutes before 9:00 AM. The operator's class page says anyone more than five minutes late cannot join.

  • Bring sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, plus a towel and a water bottle for after class.
  • Instructors shoot photos on the water with waterproof cameras, and the operator sells them for ten dollars per person.
  • Classes run rain or shine. Heavy rain, high wind or lightning cancel a class, and on this listing that means another date or a full refund. Cancel at least 24 hours ahead for a full refund.

The last minutes belong to the water: flat on the board, hands trailing, the anchor holding you in place.
