MoMA or Anton Kern: Two Rooms in One Afternoon

One is six floors of modern and contemporary art; the other is a single airy room where each piece keeps its space.

Two Blocks, Two Scales

Six Floors of Collection

MoMA spans six floors on West 53rd with painting, sculpture, photography, design, film and installation in one building, plus a walled sculpture garden. The scale is the experience: you will not see it all, so pick two floors and let the rest go. Start high and walk down; the atrium crowd thins above the second floor.

One Room, Nothing Hidden

Anton Kern has run solo and group shows since 1996, pairing emerging and established international artists in a layout that leaves each work its own air. Where MoMA asks for endurance, this asks for attention: you can stand in the middle and see the whole exhibition at once, then walk the perimeter.

How to Sequence the Day

Give the museum the morning and the gallery the late afternoon. Two blocks separate them, so the move costs minutes, and the small room resets your eye after six floors. Reverse it and the gallery feels thin; keep the order and the comparison does the work.
