Hopping into the School Year at MOCA

Teaching artist Yu Rong runs the table, opening with the old story of the Jade Rabbit and how it landed on the moon. Kids and grown-ups cut, fold, and paste their own rabbit headbands from paper and a few simple materials, each one coming out a little different from the next. Volunteers from Bunnies and Beyond sit in to talk through what caring for a real rabbit actually asks of a family. The making stays loose, and the folklore stays front and center.

The workshop opens to all ages, with the craft pitched low enough for small hands and layered enough to hold an adult's attention. Families arrive together and settle in side by side at shared tables, the youngest makers leaning on a parent for the trickier folds. The prompts pull straight from the museum collection, and the paper rabbits carry a thread of real history home. Nobody needs a drawing background to leave with something finished.

MOCA sits at 215 Centre Street on the edge of Chinatown, a short walk from the Canal Street trains on the J, N, Q, and 6 lines. The session starts at 2pm on Saturday and fills a relaxed afternoon, with the galleries open before and after for a slow look around. Entry runs free with museum admission, and the space stays small enough that arriving early helps. Turn up a little before two to claim a spot at the table.
