MJ Rehearses the 1992 Dangerous Tour at the Neil Simon

Michael Jackson's 1992 tour, rebuilt as the rehearsal room that assembled it, with more than 25 charting songs inside.

MJ opened at the Neil Simon Theatre on February 1, 2022. It is set inside the build of the 1992 Dangerous World Tour, in the rehearsal room where that tour was assembled. Road cases, a band loading in, dancers marking steps on a working floor.

Christopher Wheeldon directs and choreographs. Lynn Nottage wrote the book. More than 25 charting songs sit inside that frame, and each one lands as a number the room is still putting together. It took four Tony Awards in 2022, for choreography, lighting, sound, and the performance in the title role. The run is 2 hours and 30 minutes with one 15-minute intermission.

This listing sells a dated ticket to the Broadway run, so the performance date is the decision you make first.

The production states that all ticket purchases are final, and that tickets may not be exchanged or refunded. A reseller can add its own terms on top of that. Read the checkout page you are actually on before you confirm.

What the score is doing

The premise is the making of a tour, and the songs are placed to match it. Billie Jean and Thriller sit in the running order as material the company is still working out, which is a different job from a concert set list.

Wheeldon choreographs as well as directs, and the weight lands on the company. Long stretches belong to the full ensemble, with the title role folded into the group.

The frame also draws a boundary. The action stays inside 1992, and reviewers at the opening noted that the book leaves the later allegations against Jackson outside the story.

Three Michaels, and who plays them now

The production casts Michael Jackson at three ages at once. Ilario Grant plays MJ, the adult running the rehearsal. Brandon Lee Harris plays Michael, the younger version. A pair of child actors alternate as Little Michael.

Grant stepped into the title role on September 15, 2026, after playing MJ in the Australian production. The part stays onstage for most of the running time, and three standbys are listed to cover it. Casting has rotated since the 2022 opening, so check the current list if one performer is your reason for going.

Doors, ages and getting seated

The theatre opens 45 minutes before curtain, and the house asks you to be inside at least 30 minutes ahead. Security checks run at the entrance.

Buying through a reseller can add a step the listing does not show. Klook buyers describe collecting or fixing tickets at the Neil Simon box office on the day, in one case after the voucher link never arrived. Treat that window as part of the plan.

MJ is recommended for ages 8 and up, and children under 5 are not admitted at all. Photography, video and sound recording are prohibited during the performance, and phone use in the house is prohibited outright. There is no dress code, and the auditorium is air-conditioned through the summer.

Accessible seating sits in the orchestra. A single order can hold one wheelchair space and up to three companion seats, and a performance showing no accessible seats has sold out of them.

If English is not your first language

MJ runs its own translation service through Galapro, in Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, French and German. For a show carried this heavily by lyrics, that decides how much of the book you follow.

The theatre lends infrared headsets for sound augmentation at no charge, holding photo identification as a deposit. The house also runs an induction loop, and telecoil hearing aid users can switch their device to the T setting.

📍 The Neil Simon Theatre is at 250 West 52nd Street. Its box office opens Monday to Saturday from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and Sunday from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

Four things the listing page will not tell you:

  • The official digital lottery sells $49 seats that may be partial view, with a $2 facility fee and a $5 handling fee already inside that price
  • Standing room goes on sale two hours before a performance that has sold out
  • Groups of 10 or more are handled by Broadway Inbound on its own sales channel
  • Premium seats are sold through Broadway Direct and the theatre's own box office
