Description

The deep ravine and rocky creek are typical of waterways across the Potomac River Valley, but this stretch closely mirrors Glen Echo Park’s own shifting history. The area served as the site of an 1891 Chautauqua amphitheater and later the park’s 1911 “Midway”, before being routed into a parking lot culvert in 1956. After a 1989 flood collapsed the underground channel, the National Park Service restored the natural stream bed, leaving Minnehaha Creek to flow freely through the park once again.
