Midtown Cut-Throughs: Beat the Avenue Crowd

Start at Herald Square, keep the public-space line moving through West 50th Street, then finish inside the Madison Avenue atrium. Each stop turns a crowded block into a cleaner northbound decision.

Three faster openings

Diagonal start

Herald Square Park sits directly beside Macy’s, with chairs and open plaza space around its historic clock. Enter from West 35th Street, read the pedestrian flow, and take the open angle toward Broadway instead of tracing the curb. The roomy corner lets you choose your line before the crowd compresses. Keep moving once the clock is behind you.

Paved pause

At 745 Plaza, the useful move is simply to step out of the West 50th Street sidewalk stream. The site is a free public plaza, so aim through its open footprint and reset your direction before the next avenue. A short plaza crossing can replace a slower corner-to-corner shuffle. Leave with your northbound line already chosen.

Cool-down marker

590 Madison Public Atrium is an operational public space with seating under a glass roof. Use it as the route’s final indoor checkpoint, not a long break. Read the far side before you enter, hold a straight path through the chairs, and exit with your next turn fixed. The atrium converts the last block into one calm navigation choice.
