Mesa Verde's Story, Told From Highway 160 to Cliff Palace

An app plays Mesa Verde's history by GPS while you drive the mesa roads in your own car, at whatever pace you choose.

Load the Mesa Verde audio tour before you drive.

This is an audio guide that lives on your phone, sold by GuideAlong, the company formerly known as GyPSy Guide. You drive your own car, and the phone's GPS decides what you hear. Stories, tips and turn directions start on their own as you reach each spot, and once the tour is downloaded nothing needs a cell signal. The narration can begin on Highway 160, eastbound from Cortez or westbound from Durango, and it carries on inside the park. The park entrance is about 35 miles west of Durango, and the first cliff dwelling comes into view 21 miles past it, roughly 45 minutes up a steep and winding road. Trailers and towed vehicles are not allowed past Morefield Campground, four miles in; if you are not camping, the park has a large lot near the entrance station for them. The listing offers half-day, full-day and multi-day plans and puts the whole visit at four to twelve hours.

One purchase covers everyone in the car, and it has no fixed travel date. The voucher arrives by email and text after booking.

Cliff Palace From the Rim, or Inside With a Ranger

The narration takes you to the rim. Cliff Palace, which the park counts at 150 rooms and 23 kivas, is in full view from the overlook on the Cliff Palace Loop Road, open 8:00 AM to sunset from late spring until December 1 or the first significant snowfall. The Mesa Top Loop Road, open daily from 8:00 AM to sunset, also has views of Cliff Palace from Sun Point View and Sun Temple.

Walking into Cliff Palace or Balcony House takes a separate ranger-led tour ticket, and the 2026 tour season runs May 4 to October 21. Tickets go on sale on Recreation.gov 14 days ahead at 8:00 AM MDT, cost USD 8 a person for ages 3 and up, and fill up early. The park asks for a screenshot or printout of the digital ticket: cell service at the tour sites is too weak to load it. It also puts the drive from the entrance to the tour sites at 55 to 90 minutes. Two travelers in the review record, in 2023 and 2024, picked this audio tour after missing out on ranger tickets and saw the dwellings from the overlooks instead.

One Listed Stop Is Closed, Another Is Seasonal

The listing still names Spruce Tree House, and says in its own copy that you cannot go inside. The park closed Spruce Tree House to visitors in 2015 over the danger of rockfall; it is seen from the overlooks behind the Mesa Verde Museum. Step House on Wetherill Mesa is the one cliff dwelling open without a ranger ticket, and entry is free. Wetherill Mesa opens only part of the year, though: May 22 to October 21 in 2026, with the last car through the gate at 2:00 PM and everyone out by 4:00 PM. The park says its 12 miles of tight curves take 30 to 45 minutes, longer than the 20 minutes each way the listing gives, and vehicles over 25 feet or 8,000 pounds are not allowed. The trail to Step House is a mile round trip with a 165-foot change in elevation.

Load the Tour Before the Signal Fades

Set the app up at home or at the hotel. It runs on iOS 15 or Android 9 and newer, but not on Wi-Fi-only iPads, which lack the GPS chip it needs. The voucher code comes by email and text after booking; you redeem it with an Apple or Google account, install the free GuideAlong app, sign in with the same account and download the Mesa Verde tour over Wi-Fi or cellular data. The tour is fully downloaded once you can open it in the app and see Start Touring; check for that before you drive out of signal. The park says cell service reaches the Visitor and Research Center and the entrance area and is generally non-existent farther in, though the visitor center and the Mesa Verde Museum offer public Wi-Fi.

Reviewers who had trouble describe three snags: an account the app would not recognize, audio that would not play through a car stereo, and a download that never finished. For the car, the operator recommends a USB-C charger in the power outlet rather than the car's own USB port; audio plays through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto while the map stays on the phone, or over Bluetooth to the car speakers. Support is open daily by toll-free phone, chat and email.

What You Pay at the Gate

The app covers the narration and nothing else; the listing excludes park entry, passes and reservations. Mesa Verde charges by the car: USD 30 from May 1 to October 22 and USD 20 from October 23 to April 30, valid for seven days and paid by card only. Mesa Verde is not on the National Park Service's list of eleven parks that add a USD 100 fee for non-US residents, so visitors from abroad pay the same gate fee. The park's own USD 55 annual pass is sold only to US citizens and residents. On the booking itself, cancelling at least 24 hours before your booked date returns the full price, and the tour has no expiry date, so a change of plans needs no new date.

A traveler wrote in August 2025 that the guide "gave excellent advice about which sites to see first, depending on time available." Keep a clear day for the drive up to Park Point, which the listing calls the highest easily reached spot in the park, with a view it says reaches into all four of the Four Corners states.
