Meet at the Lobby Staircase, Then Hunt the Weatherford's Ghosts
A Saturday ghost tour with real ghost-hunting tools inside Flagstaff's Weatherford Hotel, which opened on New Year's Day, 1900.
Flagstaff Underground runs this ghost tour inside a single building, the Weatherford Hotel on the corner of Leroux Street and Aspen Avenue. It goes out once a week, on Saturday at 4:30 PM. The booking page describes dim corridors, creaky staircases and original 19th-century rooms, with real paranormal investigation tools for the group to try.

Tickets are USD 35 per person, sold for adults 18 to 75 only, and one booking covers up to 20 people. There is no fee to enter the hotel itself.

The tour starts and ends in the hotel lobby, and the listing gives about an hour of its 75 minutes to the walk through the building. The guide leads the group through its corridors and up and down its stairs, telling the stories tied to the building, from tales of lost love to encounters the listing says staff and guests have reported. Guests get a chance to use real ghost-hunting tools along the way.
Areas usually closed to the public, such as parts of the basement and hidden rooms, can be on the route, but the listing marks them "if applicable", so they are not guaranteed on every tour. The building is still a working hotel, with guest rooms upstairs and a pub on the ground floor.
The Building Behind the Stories

The building's early dates are on file with the National Register of Historic Places. Its 1978 nomination says J.W. Weatherford built it in 1898, the year after a run of fires led Flagstaff to require brick, stone or iron in the business district, as a general store with his family living upstairs. In March 1899 he began a three-story hotel addition, and the hotel had its grand opening on New Year's Day, 1900. The same form says Zane Grey sometimes stayed in two rooms west of the bridal suite and described the hotel in The Call of the Canyon. By the hotel's account, he wrote the novel upstairs, in rooms that are now part of the Zane Grey Ballroom. The hotel also names Thomas Moran and William Randolph Hearst among early guests.
The balcony that wrapped three sides of the building and its cupola were damaged by fire in 1929 and removed. The old postcard in this section shows the corner without the balcony. The family lost the hotel in 1933, and Henry Taylor bought it with his brother Lloyd in 1975, hoping to save it from demolition. The first stage of the rebuilt wraparound porches was finished in December 1998, and the basement bar, The Gopher Hole, opened in 2014, recreating an earlier club in that space.
Halloween Falls on a Saturday This Year
There is one departure a week. The booking calendar and the operator's own tour page both give Saturday at 4:30 PM. The Weatherford Hotel lists the tour on its own events calendar too, with group check-in in the hotel lobby every Saturday at 4:30 PM, and its calendar entry runs from 4:30 to 6:00 PM, a little longer than the listing's 75 minutes.
Halloween 2026 falls on a Saturday, and as of October 23, 2026, the 4:30 PM slot that day was still open on the booking page. Sample Saturdays checked the same day, into early March 2027, were open too.
