Masquerade Turns Phantom Into a Live Story

Masquerade reshapes The Phantom of the Opera under director Diane Paulus and producer Randy Weiner, the team behind Sleep No More and The Box. They stage it across a multi-level building, with roughly 360 guests a night split into small masked groups that move through the story. Dressing the part is expected, and the mask becomes part of the admission ritual. It is a full reimagining, detailed and sensuous enough to win over people who never cared for the original.

You follow the story on foot, climbing between floors into rooms built straight from the Phantom world. A gondola glides over a bed of smoke in one space, the doomed chandelier looms in another, and further on the graveyard waits where Christine weighs her choice. Haze and lasers wash the halls, with props tucked into even the passages between scenes. Keep your phone away and let the rooms pull you in as the crowd thins and the details take over.

The August 28 show starts at 7:45 PM at 218 West 57th Street, and evening performances run 21 and over. Bring a valid photo ID, they check it at the door. Tickets start at $195 and climb with later showtimes, worth booking the slot you want early. Come dressed to play along, and leave yourself a few minutes to get into character before you step inside.
