Marin Islands National Wildlife Refuge
4.8 (11)park
Two protected bay islands and tidelands that shelter one of the Bay Area’s largest heron and egret nesting colonies.
Description

Set in San Pablo Bay, East Marin and West Marin rise 85 feet above the water, though the islands cover just 10.5 acres of the 339-acre refuge—the rest consists of submerged tidelands and tidal mud flats. Situated along the Pacific Flyway, this former family retreat holds mixed evergreen forest, coastal prairie, and coastal salt marsh for resident and migratory birds. To shield the sensitive wildlife, public access to the islands is restricted.
