Occupying an 1839 building on the site where Thomas Paine died in 1809, the venue originally opened as a speakeasy in 1929 under French founder Marie DuMont. It phased out food service after the Grant family took over in 1972, shifting focus entirely to its communal night-time format. Behind the bar sits a historic WPA etched glass mural depicting the American and French Revolutions, anchoring the room's longstanding neighborhood identity.
