Malibu Creek to The Old Place: A Black Friday Canyon Walk and Oak-Grilled Lunch
Skip the sales and drive west. Canyon walls, a shallow pool and a roadhouse grill that burns local oak are close enough to string together before the light goes, and none of it involves a mall parking lot.
Canyon to Cornell
🥾 Two and a half miles to Rock Pool
The path leaves the main lot and follows Crags Road beside a seasonal creek, then narrows toward the rock formation that names the pool. State parks rate it easy and put the round trip at 2.5 miles, about ninety minutes at a stroll. Boulders the size of cars frame the water at the far end, and past the pool the trail climbs to the M*A*S*H site, rated moderate. The footbridge there came out in late October, so the last stretch means wading. Parking runs 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and dogs aren't allowed on the trails, so this one's best without them.

🔥 Steak over red oak at The Old Place
Ten minutes west on Mulholland brings you to the old Cornell store, where the bar came out of a Virginia City saloon and the grill burns local red oak. Outdoor tables open at noon on Friday and lunch runs until 4 p.m., with the oak-grilled steak sandwich at 26 dollars. The kitchen keeps no freezer, so specials sell out, and indoor tables only seat at 5 and 7. The site never posts holiday hours, so call ahead on Black Friday: (818) 706-9001.

🗺️ A morning plan that beats the sales
Leave downtown at 9 a.m. for the 50-minute drive to Las Virgenes Road, then pay 9 dollars for three hours; the park notes that peak weekends and holidays can carry higher rates, so check the board at the gate. On trail by 10, back at the lot by a quarter to twelve, then ten minutes west to Cornell for the noon opening. Sunset lands at 4.46 p.m., so the canyon side dims early and the 101 is calmer before 3. If the Old Place sells out or the line is long, five minutes back east is Paramount Ranch, whose rebuilt Western Town set stands among valley oaks, and Agoura Hills has the rest of the food. Trails close on red flag days, so check parks.ca.gov that morning.
If The Old Place Is Full
The kitchen runs out, because there is no freezer, so the fallback is fifteen minutes back toward the 101: a Calabasas deli, a fish house on the Commons, and a Tuscan kitchen with a patio, all open on Friday.
