Description

Set within Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline, the route crosses dry slopes of low-growing kiawe and panini cactus, taking in views of Koko Head and Koko Crater. On clear days, visibility reaches across the channel to Moloka‘i and Lana‘i.

Makapu‘u Head looks down across the windward coast to the 1909 Makapu‘u Lighthouse, though the lighthouse itself is off-limits. Offshore outcrops serve as wildlife sanctuaries for Hawaiian seabirds such as the ‘iwa and tropicbird. Along the exposed, windy path, an interpretive sign and viewing scope help track migrating humpback whales between November and May.
