Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse Trail
4.8 (5,197)park
A paved cliffside path with sweeping ocean views, a historic red-roofed lighthouse, and seasonal whale watching.
Description

Set within the Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline, the route cuts through an arid landscape of low-growing kiawe and panini cactus, fully exposed to the sun and often buffeted by wind near the summit. The ascent looks back across Koko Head and Koko Crater, while the destination at Makapu‘u Head takes in the windward coast and offshore islets designated as seabird sanctuaries for species such as the ‘iwa and tropicbird. On clear days, the horizon reaches Moloka‘i and Lāna‘i. Along the path, an interpretive sign and viewing scope aid in spotting humpbacks between November and May, overlooking the 1909 lighthouse below, which remains strictly off-limits.
