Description

As the northern half of downtown's Plaza Blocks—two courthouse squares bounded by Third and Fourth Avenues and Salmon and Madison Streets—the grounds take their name from Kentuckian Daniel H. Lownsdale, who settled in Portland in 1845 when the city counted fewer than 800 residents. Douglas Tilden's 1906 sculpture honors Oregonians killed in the Spanish-American War, standing alongside additional historical memorials across the square.
