Looking for Wild Dolphins Between Hathaway Bridge and Shell Island

A six-passenger boat out of Panama City looks for wild bottlenose dolphins, with a chance to swim and a stop at Shell Island.

Spot wild dolphins near Shell Island.

Bay Point Water Sports runs this as a dolphin swim, and the listing lays out the plan in a few lines. The captain heads out toward the Gulf of Mexico, finds wild bottlenose dolphins and brings the boat in close, and passengers who want to can get out and swim with a mask and snorkel. Afterward the captain takes the group snorkeling and drops it off on Shell Island.

Each boat carries six passengers at most, and the whole outing runs two hours from the dock at Papa Joe's Bayside, at the east end of the Hathaway Bridge.

The listing price is USD 71 per person for every age band it sells, children included, and bookings confirm instantly. Boats leave at 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 12:30 PM, 3:00 PM and 5:30 PM, and booking closes an hour before departure. Snorkel gear and bottled water are on the inclusion list, though two reviewers say no water was handed out on their trips.

How a Swim Actually Goes

Guest reviews on the listing fill in what the listing leaves out. Most reviews that name a captain mention Dale, and a few mention Rob. The routine they describe is quick: the boat tracks a pod, passengers in life jackets sit on the front edge, and everyone drops in at the captain's signal, sometimes for a short look before climbing back aboard. Several low-rated reviews say nobody explained that routine before the first jump, and it pays to ask at the dock how entries work before the boat leaves.

Reviewers also mention other tour boats around the same pods, a swim over a shipwreck, and sightings of rays, sea turtles and manatees. A July 2026 review shows the other side: the pod moved off after a cannonball entry, and that group never swam with dolphins at all.

What Reviews Say About the Shell Island Stop

The listing promises snorkeling and a drop-off on Shell Island, which the operator's own site describes as seven miles long. Three reviews between August 2025 and August 2026 put the island stop at roughly ten to fifteen minutes, and two September 2026 reviews say the stop came up only after passengers asked for it. Others describe emerald, clear water just off the island and a short walk up the beach.

Masks and snorkels come with the trip, and the listing invites you to bring your own. Two reviewers who found the loaner gear dirty would agree.

What NOAA Says About Swimming With Wild Dolphins

Dolphins are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and NOAA Fisheries sets out its position on its marine life viewing guidelines page. It asks people on boats to stay at least 50 yards from dolphins, calls feeding a dolphin harmful and illegal, and lists this guideline: "Do not swim with, ride, pet, touch, or attempt to interact with marine mammals or sea turtles in the wild." This trip is built around exactly that swim.

Getting in is a choice each passenger makes. One October 2025 group chose to stay aboard, and the captain stayed nearby while they watched a dolphin for a long time.

Who Fits Aboard, and What Cancels a Trip

One booking covers up to six travelers and needs an adult on it. The listing ticks a box saying the trip suits all physical fitness levels and another saying infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller. Reviewers describe getting in by sitting on the boat's edge and jumping, and the operator's site does not mention strollers or fitness levels.

Bad weather and too few travelers can both cancel a departure, and two low-rated reviews describe slots that were moved or pushed back. A June 2026 review describes wind turning the water choppy and murky, and a November 2025 review warns that October water can feel cold.

📍 Papa Joe's Bayside, 4601 W. Hwy. 98, Panama City, at the east end of the Hathaway Bridge. The listing asks you to look for the Papa Joe's sign out front, arrive 20 to 30 minutes early, and text or call (850) 236-5386 when you get there.

One June 2025 review caught the sunset from the 5:30 PM boat. The trip ends back at the same dock, where Papa Joe's parks its own food truck and a bar truck by the water.
