Look Through the Hull Where Tarpon Springs' Manatees Spend Winter

A transparent hull turns two hours of paddling into two hours of looking down. The route crosses the Anclote River, stops at a mangrove island, and works into Spring Bayou, the warm-water pocket manatees retreat to when the Gulf cools.

Spot manatees through a clear kayak in Tarpon Springs.

Most kayaks put a deck between you and the water. This one does not. The floor is clear, so the tannic brown of the Anclote River and anything moving through it stays in view for the whole two hours.

Tarpon Springs is a good place to spend that attention. Spring Bayou holds warmer water than the open Gulf, and manatees move into it through the cold months. The guide saves it for the end of the paddle, after the river and the mangroves.

Groups launch three times a day, at nine, at noon and at three. The itinerary puts fifteen minutes at each of the three stops, so most of the two hours is spent paddling between them.

Kayaks, paddles, seats, life jackets and whistles come with the seat. The company also lends dry bags for phones and keys.

The Anclote Runs Brown, Which Is the Point

A clear floor changes what a flat Florida waterway looks like. From the surface the Anclote reads as opaque. Through the hull it reads as depth.

The operator's own list of what turns up under and around the boat runs to birds, crabs and the occasional dolphin, with manatees the reason most people book. Wildlife sightings are at random and not guaranteed.

The floor also changes the etiquette on board. You never have to lean over the side to look, which keeps the boat steady and your hands on the paddle.

Three Stops Between the Sponge Docks and Spring Bayou

The paddle opens on the Anclote River, the working water of the Tarpon Springs sponge fleet. Whether a sponge boat is out that morning is luck. The guide fills the crossing with the history of the docks and the Greek community that built them.

The middle stop is a mangrove island. Fifteen minutes there goes into the root tangle, looking for birds and crabs.

Then the route turns into the bayous, past the Victorian-style mansions the operator dates to the town's first settlers, and past Craig Park. Spring Bayou is last. The operator calls the curve of water there the Golden Crescent.

The Season Moves the Price and the Odds

Manatees are the reason this tour carries a season in its name, and the cold is the reason they turn up. The colder the week, the better the odds in Spring Bayou.

The price follows the same calendar. An adult seat is USD 69 from November 1 to December 25 and again from January 3 to March 22, USD 79 between March 23 and October 31, and USD 89 from December 26 to January 2. Children pay USD 59, USD 74 and USD 84 in those same periods.

So the cheapest seats and the coldest water arrive together. That is a rare thing to be able to say about Florida.

Weight, Age and Weather

A few limits decide whether this one works for your group.

  • The operator sets a weight limit of 250 lbs per guest, and a combined limit of 425 lbs for two people in a tandem kayak.
  • Children from age three can ride, and every booking needs an adult on it. One booking can carry up to ten travelers.
  • It is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, for pregnant travelers, or for travelers with poor cardiovascular health, and it asks for at least a moderate level of physical fitness.
  • Guiding is in English.
  • Cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time for a full refund. The operator may also cancel the departure for bad weather.

📍 Launch is from Belle Harbour Marina at 307 Anclote Rd, Tarpon Springs. Park in the marina lot, walk through the main entrance and continue straight until you reach the water, then turn right. The clear kayaks sit on the floating dock and they are hard to miss.

Two hours later the same dock takes you back, with wet feet and a camera roll shot straight down through the floor of a boat.
