Lincoln Park South Pond: Skyline Reflections at Sunset, Then $1.50 Pintxos

A free pond walk timed to sunset through November 18, or in afternoon light after that, then a short walk west before a tapas bar's happy hour ends at 6.

Time your pond walk to sunset.

🌇 Watch the towers show up twice

Start on the Lester E. Fisher Bridge by Café Brauer, the spot the zoo itself names for its skyline view. The towers rise to the south, so near sunset the low western light hits their sides and the whole row repeats in South Pond. The pond walk is free and needs no ticket. The Park District says this natural area follows the zoo's hours, and the zoo now posts a separate winter schedule: the gates stay open until 5 PM through November 18, then close in the mid-afternoon, about an hour before sunset, from November 19 to January 3. That makes the sunset version a November 2 to 18 plan — across those two weeks the sun goes down between about 4:45 and 4:25 PM, so reach the bridge around 4 PM. From November 19 come for the afternoon light instead and walk to the bar early; the timing at the end of the walk flips with the season.

🍷 Walk west to the bar seats

From the bridge, head out to Clark Street and west along Armitage to Halsted, about 1.6 km or a 20-minute walk to Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba. Happy hour runs daily from 4 to 6 PM at the bar seats and cocktail area only, first come first served, and no seat is held. That is where the $1.50 pintxos are, alongside $23 sangria pitchers, $4 Estrella beers and tapas from $3 to $5. Every check carries a 3.5% surcharge, which the restaurant says you can ask to have removed.

🧭 The order that makes it work

Leave the bridge as soon as the sun drops — about 4:45 PM in early November, about 4:30 PM by the 18th — which puts you at the bar by roughly 5:15 PM, 5:30 at the latest, with time left on the happy hour list. From November 19 the gates close roughly an hour before sunset, so flip the order: walk the boardwalk in the afternoon light, head out when the gates start closing, and the 20-minute walk still lands you at the bar right as happy hour opens at 4. If the bar looks full, a short ride saves the walk. Two people splitting a pitcher, a few pintxos and a couple of tapas stay under $30 each before tax and tip. ZooLights, the zoo's separately ticketed light show, runs November 20 to January 3; the pond walk does not need it.
