Library, Morgan and MoMA: A Free Friday for NY State Residents

Two Friday bookings line up rare books, a Gilded Age library and a short MoMA gallery list in one evening.

Book the Morgan and MoMA first.

🗺️ Three stops, 4:00 to 8:15 PM

📚 Stop 1 · New York Public Library

Plan on 4:00 to 4:45 PM here. The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building on Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street costs nothing to enter and stays open until 6:00 PM. Its Treasures exhibition rotates part of its display, and long-term highlights have included a Gutenberg Bible and the original Winnie-the-Pooh toys.

Before Friday, book the Morgan's free timed tickets, released one week ahead, and MoMA's free Friday tickets, which cover New York State residents only. The time that opens each stop is a suggested pace. Leave at 4:45 PM for the walk to Madison Avenue and 36th Street.

🏛️ Stop 2 · The Morgan Library & Museum

Plan on 5:00 to 6:15 PM here. Free Friday Evenings run from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, and the 5:00 PM entry fits this pace.

Inside, Pierpont Morgan's library climbs three tiers of book-lined shelves under a painted ceiling, and his red-walled study sits across the rotunda. Head out at 6:15 PM for the 20-minute walk up Madison Avenue to 53rd Street.

🎨 Stop 3 · The Museum of Modern Art

Plan on 6:45 to 8:15 PM here. UNIQLO Friday Nights run from 5:30 to 8:30 PM, and the galleries close about 15 minutes before the building. Book an entry near 6:45 PM.

Ninety minutes inside suits two floors of the collection. The entrance sits on West 53rd Street, behind the museum's glass front. From the upper-floor windows, the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden spreads out below, with marble paving, tall trees and two reflecting pools between the galleries.
