Let the Manatees Set the Distance on This Haulover Canal Paddle

The product name says Orlando. The launch is an hour and a quarter east of it, at the end of a refuge road outside Titusville, on a shallow brackish lagoon that holds manatees for much of the year. Two hours on the water, one departure a day, and an etiquette that leaves the animals in charge of how close anything gets.

Paddle Haulover Canal and let the manatees come to you.

The product name says Orlando. The launch is an hour and a quarter east of it.

Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge sits between Titusville and the ocean, and the operator's own FAQ puts the Haulover Canal launch at about an hour and fifteen minutes from Orlando in peak season. The refuge is not marked the way a town is, and the drive is the part people underestimate. Reviewers say the same thing in different words: leave early, and read the route before you lose signal.

What waits at the end is a wide, dark, shallow estuary. Manatees graze in it. Dolphins fish through it. Neither of them is working to a schedule.

This booking carries one departure a day, at eleven in the morning, seven days a week. A guide paddles with every group, and the kayak, paddle and life vest come with the seat. Gratuities are the only thing the booking leaves out.

The booking sells two hours. The operator's own site lists this trip at about an hour and a half. Its own calendar also advertises morning and afternoon departures that shift with the season, so eleven is this listing's slot rather than the only time the trip runs.

Hands on the Paddle, and Let Them Decide

The refuge is blunt about this. Feeding, watering, enticing or disturbing manatees is not permitted, and Florida law makes it unlawful for anyone, by any means, to annoy, molest, harass or disturb one. Neither rule cares what you are paddling.

What is left is passive observation. You hold the boat still and let the animal decide whether it wants a closer look. Manatees often do decide, and when one surfaces alongside a sit-on-top kayak you feel the hull move before you see anything. Older reviews of this trip describe petting them. Do not plan a morning around that.

The canal is a designated manatee refuge in its own right. The federal rule inside it is slow speed all year, channel included, and it is written for watercraft of every kind, engines or no engines.

Dolphins are the other half of the name and the thinner half. Sixty-two of the hundred reviews on this trip mention them, usually passing through on the way somewhere else.

Nothing is promised. Manatees follow water temperature, and a cold snap or an early warm spell moves them. Eighty-eight of those hundred reviews mention manatees. Three describe a morning with none.

The refuge keeps a published list of approved paddling guides, and this operator is on it.

The Last Turn Is Not Signposted

BK Adventure lists two Haulover-area route options; your confirmation tells you which launch to use. Treat that email as the instruction and settle the driving before you leave town. Both of the operator's directions pages carry the same caution: GPS is not always reliable out there, cell service drops in places, and reviewers say the turn-off is easy to miss.

The refuge is a federal fee area, and launching from one of its fee ramps takes a ten-dollar daily pass on the car. It is sold on an honour system at the ramp, cash or check only, so do not turn up carrying nothing but a card. A twenty-five-dollar annual pass covers it, and so does a current America the Beautiful pass or a signed federal Duck Stamp; one pass admits everyone in a private car, with no resident or non-resident tier. Restrooms are the other thing to settle in town: the refuge lists three, at the visitor centre, on Black Point Wildlife Drive and at Playalinda Beach, and neither Haulover launch is one of them. The refuge also warns that roads and boat ramps may be restricted during launch operations at the space centre next door, without notice.

Be there fifteen minutes early. The operator's published policy says it can sell your seat if you are not at the meeting point at the scheduled time.

Who the Booking Form Will Actually Seat

One kind of seat is on sale here: an adult seat, ages six to ninety-nine, at a single price. The notes on the listing recommend three years and older, the operator's own page sets the minimum at five, and the booking form carries no ticket for anyone under six. Plan around the form.

Weight is the limit the listing leaves out, and this trip's own page sets it:

  • 415 lbs total for the two-person kayak
  • neither paddler over 250 lbs

Above that the operator may seat you alone in a clear kayak, and says an additional charge can apply. The looser pair further down the same page, 275 single and 550 tandem, answers for the company's night trips, not this one.

The listing asks for a moderate level of physical fitness and calls the trip good for families and beginners. The operator's own guidance names this launch first for people who have never kayaked and for groups with small children. Reviewers who had never held a paddle describe the water as easy.

Asked about dogs, the operator's FAQ names this trip as the one to choose.

Rain Does Not Stop It. Lightning Does.

This one runs rain or shine, and the operator says light rain tends to make manatees more active. What holds the boats on the beach is lightning and wind.

The published thresholds are thirty minutes after the last strike within ten miles, and wind under fifteen miles an hour for thirty minutes, before anyone launches. Departures get pushed back when that happens, so leave the rest of the morning loose.

The terms that govern this booking are the ones on the booking page. Cancel at least twenty-four hours ahead for a full refund; inside that window nothing comes back. If the trip is called off for weather, the listing gives you the choice of another date or a full refund.

Sunblock, insect repellent, sunglasses and a water bottle are what the listing asks you to bring. The map below marks the canal; your confirmation names the bank.

Set the alarm by the drive time. The last two hours of the morning belong to whatever decides to surface beside the boat.
