Legendary Mural
attraction
A mural honoring hometown hip-hop trailblazers The Roots, painted down the block from the arts school where they formed.
Description
Spanning the wall of a former charter school in Center City, the piece was produced through Mural Arts Philadelphia after a national call. Local collective Amber Art and Design featuring Tatyana Fazlalizadeh—led by Ernel Martinez alongside Charles Barbin, Willis Humphrey, and Keir Johnston—crafted the work, tracing founders Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson from student roots to international stages.
It is part of the Albert M. Greenfield African American Iconic Images Collection, a curated Mural Arts series reflecting the city's African American experience that features narration by Questlove on the mural's themes and community context.
