Leave Harbor Island Under Sail, Bound for San Diego's Skyline

A Catalina 34 with a cushioned cabin below heads out across the bay, and guests have been handed the wheel for a stretch.

Sail from Harbor Island toward the San Diego skyline.

Imagine Sailing San Diego runs this two-hour sail on a Catalina 34, a 34-foot cruising yacht with a cabin below and a wood-trimmed cockpit. The listing names two things on the course, the downtown skyline and the open water of the bay. It leaves the rest of the route unwritten.

Every booking requires at least two adults aged 18 to 64. That rules out solo travelers as well as couples where both guests are 65 or older.

Bookings close two hours before departure and are confirmed instantly.

The Captain Narrates, and Guests Have Taken the Wheel

The operator introduces Captain Mike Sopher as a licensed 100-ton U.S. Coast Guard Near Coastal Master and describes the boat as a 34-foot Catalina named Imagination. Mike is the captain reviewers name most often. The operator has said that three captains work the boat, and reviews from the past two years also name Captains Dave, Peter and Sal.

What guests describe most is the talk: the history of the bay, the navy, the ships at the Maritime Museum, and answers to whatever they asked. Several guests were invited to steer for a stretch, and one got a short sailing lesson. Ask at the start.

Below deck there are cushioned settees and, by one guest's account, a small toilet.

Downtown Towers, Navy Gray and the Odd Sea Lion on a Buoy

Guests' accounts fill in what the listing leaves open. The USS Midway, the naval base, the Coronado Bridge and the historic ships at the Maritime Museum come up again and again. One November guest watched an aircraft carrier come into port and pass alongside. Sea lions turn up in several reviews and in the operator's own photos, hauled out on docks and buoys, while the listing itself promises only "many types of sea life".

How much of the two hours runs under sail depends on the breeze. Guests who had plenty of wind describe sailing across the bay. Others describe a mix of motor and sail, and the operator says it motors as needed in light wind to reach the sights on the bay.

Bring the Bottle and the Ice, the Boat Has Jackets

Bottled water, sodas and chips come with the fare. Alcohol is BYOB for guests over 21, and one guest's tip for cocktails was to bring your own ice as well.

One guest warned how cool it gets on the water once the sun goes down. Recent guests mention blankets and loaner jackets or hoodies on board, in a range of sizes.

Sunset comes up in many reviews. Once the clocks change in the fall and it is dark by 5:00 PM, the operator says it calls anyone booked on that slot to arrange a 3:00 PM departure.

The listing calls the sail suitable for all physical fitness levels. It does not recommend it for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health.

Who You Might Share the Cockpit With

A departure carries six guests at most, and seats sell individually. A booking for two can share the cockpit with up to four other travelers. Several guests ended up with the boat to themselves. Another couple shared it with one other couple and found the group the right size for the boat.

Children from 1 to 4 ride on an adult's lap and still pay the full per-person fare. Every age band pays the same fare on this listing. Service animals are allowed.

📍 Meet at Cabrillo Isle Marina, now called Safe Harbor Cabrillo Isle, at 1450 Harbor Island Drive, in front of the seal fountain. The listing notes public transportation nearby.

A full refund needs cancellation at least 24 hours before departure. If the operator cancels for poor weather or too few travelers, the listing offers another date or a full refund.

The sail ends back at the fountain two hours after it left, with downtown across the water.
