Learn to Pop Up in Carlsbad With Private Surf Coaching
A two-hour private lesson on the Carlsbad coast: footwork on the sand first, then whitewater with your instructor alongside.
Wavehuggers runs this as a private lesson: one booking, one instructor, and no other group sharing the session. The instructor brings the surfboards and wetsuits to the beach. The lesson opens with basic footwork on the sand before anyone paddles out. In the water, the instructor stays with you to help you paddle out, catch waves and improve your technique, and the listing says the coaching also covers safety, etiquette, tides and ocean conditions.
Helina Beck founded the school in 2013. Her sister, pro surfer Holly Beck, taught her to surf at Torrance Beach when she was eight. Wavehuggers now teaches across Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego, and the listing says it uses its lessons to share the importance of ocean conservation alongside the surfing.

As of October 15, 2026, the listing prices the lesson per booking rather than per surfer: USD 170 for one, USD 289 for two and USD 630 for a group of six. All sales are final, with no refund for a cancellation.
2-Hour Private Surf Lesson in CarlsbadTwo hours with a CPR-certified instructor for one to six surfers. Surfboards and wetsuits included.www.viator.comFootwork Drills Come Before the First Paddle Out

The listing sets the order of the two hours: basic footwork on the beach, then the same moves in the water, with the instructor beside you for the paddle out and each wave. Lessons start and end on time, and the operator's FAQ suggests arriving about 10 minutes early to park. It has no reserved parking at its beaches, which can get crowded at peak times.
The FAQ lists the gear as 3/2 mm full-body wetsuits and foam boards between 7 and 9 feet long. Bring a swimsuit to wear under the wetsuit, plus a towel, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, water and warm, dry clothes for afterward. The operator's policy page says the lesson runs two hours to leave time for practice on the beach and for catching waves; a surfer can end early, but the operator cannot reschedule the unused time for another day.
North Ponto Beach, the Operator's Carlsbad Spot

The listing does not name a beach. After booking, a staff member sends your instructor's contact details, and the instructor follows up with meeting instructions. The operator's own Carlsbad page says it meets students at North Ponto Beach, with parking in a small lot off Carlsbad Boulevard just north of the state campgrounds, listed at 6039-6325 Carlsbad Blvd. That lot belongs to the North Ponto day-use area of South Carlsbad State Beach, and California State Parks lists the park's vehicle day-use fee at USD 10, or USD 20 when its weekend, holiday or peak-season rate applies.
The operator describes the stretch by the campgrounds as often uncrowded and very flat, with lots of whitewater on most days, and says that suits anyone still working on a pop-up or on paddling into waves. In its description, the beaches of southern Carlsbad sit below cliffs and bluffs but stay flat and sandy at the water's edge. The instructor's message is the one to follow on the day: Wavehuggers reserves the right to move a lesson when ocean conditions change.
From Age Three to Eighty-Five, Swimmers or Not
The operator's FAQ says it has taught children as young as 3 and adults as old as 85, and it shapes each lesson around the surfer's age, abilities and goals. Very young children stay in very shallow water with the instructor holding the board the whole time, and some older surfers choose to ride waves on their bellies. Being a strong swimmer helps but is not required: beginners who cannot swim stay in water shallow enough to stand in.
The listing is more cautious on health. It does not recommend the lesson for pregnant travelers or for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health, and it asks for at least a moderate level of physical fitness. Booking asks for each surfer's height and weight.
Group Size, Same-Day Bookings and the No-Refund Rule
One booking covers one to six surfers. The operator's FAQ puts private lessons at four students per instructor, with the instructor rotating to help each surfer into waves, staying closer to shore with beginners and taking more experienced surfers farther out when conditions allow. The listing asks groups of seven or more, and anyone who wants a lesson within the next 24 hours, to call the operator before booking. Viator's own booking cutoff is four hours before the start time.
Viator sells the lesson as all sales final. The listing's booking note says a lesson cancelled within 24 hours of its start can be moved to another date on the client's written request. The operator says it surfs rain or shine and cancels a lesson only when a professional lifeguard deems the conditions unsafe.
Once the booking is in, watch for the instructor's message with the meeting point and plan to be parked about 10 minutes before the start. From there it is two hours on a long foam board, from footwork drills on the sand to riding whitewater toward the beach.
