Description

Designed by LeRoy Skillman and built in 1964, the park was created as the primary green space for the eastern, more industrial side of Southwest D.C. near public housing. It grew out of an urban renewal program that doubled local parkland by closing off vehicular streets. Because existing buildings remained at two corners, the site became a three-block-long pedestrian corridor running north to south, where concrete sidewalks lined with lawn and deciduous trees flank the wider central clearing.
