Description

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with natural urushi lacquer and gold, making the cracks part of the object's beauty. In a two-hour session led by artist makomako, you'll work on a prepared ceramic piece using traditional techniques, explore the history and philosophy behind the practice, and take home the finished piece. All tools and materials are provided. Note that this workshop uses urushi lacquer, the natural sap of the lacquer tree; in its uncured state it contains urushiol, the same allergen as poison ivy, and may cause skin irritation in some people. The workshop is open to participants aged 16 and older.
