Kids Run the Water Cannons, Ninety Minutes on Charleston Harbor
A pirate cruise built for kids, where the young crew works the water cannons and divvies up the treasure.
The Black Ghost pulls off the dock at Ripley Light Marina with a deck full of children in skull-and-crossbones bandanas, and for the next ninety minutes the grown-ups are an audience. The kids get pirate names. The kids get the water cannons racked along the rail.
The crew spends the whole sailing handing jobs to the children. The route runs out into Charleston harbor and the creeks that feed it. Marsh grass, bridge pilings, passing boats.

The Black Ghost runs forty-five feet and carries up to thirty passengers, inspected and certified by the US Coast Guard. The operator prices the adventure at USD 43 per person.

Pirate training comes first. Every child is given a pirate name and taught a little pirate lingo. Then the mops appear.
Swabbing the deck is an actual assignment on this cruise, mop and all. The payoff lands later in the ninety minutes, when a chest of gold coins and jewels is opened on deck and divvied up among the young crew, nobody left out. The adults watch this part from the bench seats.
One thing to settle before you arrive: the headscarves, foam swords and treasure pouches are a separate purchase, not folded into the fare. The operator sells them either when you book or at check-in, so the choice can be made before anyone is standing on the dock. Parents have been flagging the cost since 2021, and one writing in September 2024 recommends paying for it anyway.
Sneaky Pete Comes for the Treasure Map

The villain turns up in a small open skiff flying his own black flag. The crew answers with the water cannons racked along both rails, and the chase is the loudest stretch of the ninety minutes. These are working water cannons pumping river water, and the children are the ones aiming them.
The operator builds the entire May-to-September season around his return. The booking listing is more careful, telling travellers only that Sneaky Pete could lurk around any corner. Some of that water blows back aboard on the wind, though the crew's own answer is that passengers typically stay dry.
She Was a Hudson River Ferry Before Any of This
The boat came out of Deltaville, Virginia, a town known for Chesapeake workboats, and she was built there as a passenger ferry. She spent most of her working life carrying people on the Hudson River near New York City, then went south to Cocoa Beach for cruises on the Indian River.
Charleston got her in 2015 and rebuilt her into a pirate ship, working first out of Bohicket Marina near Kiawah Island. 2026 is her eleventh year of service under the black flag.
May Through September, and Who Can Come Aboard
The season runs May through September. Every child has to be aboard with a responsible adult. The operator aims the adventure at children between three and ten, and says it has carried everyone from two-year-olds to ninety-year-old grandmothers; the booking listing itself sets no minimum age.
Parents put the low end higher. A parent who brought toddlers in July 2023 suggested four and up, because the crew holds character for the full ninety minutes and that means a lot of shouting, with the children chanting back; their youngest was frightened by the volume. At the other end, families have brought nine-year-olds who boarded expecting something too babyish and were absorbed within minutes. Nashmom, writing in June 2025, described how the crew works that spread: "the pirates make sure all the kids participate in the level they are comfortable with."
What the listing confirms about access:
- Wheelchair accessible, and the nearby transport options are wheelchair accessible too
- Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller
- Service animals allowed
- Suitable for all physical fitness levels
- Public transport options nearby
Gratuity is not included in the fare.
📍 Ripley Light Marina sits on Ashley Point Drive in West Ashley, in front of the La Quinta Inn. Look for the yellow Pirates sign. Parking is free directly in front of the marina, and the hotel charges for its own lot down the left side. Check-in and the briefing take ten to fifteen minutes. The crew asks you to arrive fifteen minutes before your assigned check-in time. The cruise does not wait for stragglers.
Before you go:
- The waiver is signed online and covers every passenger. The link arrives with the booking confirmation
- The deck has a cover over it and there is no enclosed space anywhere on the boat. Sunscreen on bright days, a light rain jacket on grey ones
- A light drizzle does not stop the sailing. If weather does cancel it, the crew calls at least an hour before cruise time and you rebook or take the money back
- The only head aboard is a mini port-a-potty, so the marina restrooms are the ones to use before boarding
Cancelling through the booking page refunds the fare in full up to twenty-four hours before departure. The operator's own desk asks for forty-eight hours on cruises booked direct, so forty-eight hours out is the line that holds either way.
Ninety minutes later the Black Ghost is back alongside, and you have a hoarse child and the rest of a Charleston afternoon to fill.
