Kakaʻako Ocean Friendly Garden
5.0 (4)park
A volunteer-tended green space filtering urban runoff with native Hawaiian plants and a community food forest.
Description

Once a trash-filled lot across from the John A. Burns School of Medicine, the 11,000-square-foot site operates on land provided by Kamehameha Schools as a model for ocean protection and access to nature.
The space is transitioning into a nursery for endemic and canoe plants, raising culturally significant, climate-resilient greenery for local residents and restoration initiatives across the island. Cultivation also extends to community food security, producing organic harvests of ʻulu (breadfruit), maiʻa (bananas), and kalo (taro).
