Description

This dynamic 18.5-foot bronze equestrian monument by Anna Hyatt Huntington stands at Artists' Gate in Central Park, depicting Cuban patriot, writer, and journalist José Martí in civilian clothes slumping to one side clutching his chest. Completed in 1959 and dedicated in May 1965, the statue captures the precise moment Martí was mortally wounded at the 1895 Battle of Dos Ríos in Cuba. The monument rests atop a 16.5-foot granite pedestal complete with sculpted Cuban native plants underfoot, functioning as both a historical landmark and a notable stop near local carriage tour pickup areas.
