Description

Its roots trace to 1894, when Rev. Taijo Matsuo arrived to minister to the spiritual needs of Japanese immigrants, inaugurating Jodo Shu practice in Hawaii. Formally founded in 1907 in Kakaʻako and later relocated to Makiki Street, the site remains an active civic and spiritual presence, holding Sunday services, memorial rites, and community bazaars rooted in over a century of local history.
