Ice Age Fossils State Park
4.6 (315)park
A protected wash rich with Ice Age fossils, where mammoths, dire wolves, and American lions once roamed.
Description

Spanning 315 acres along the upper Las Vegas Wash, the park preserves terrain that was once a verdant Ice Age habitat for extinct wildlife, including camels and ground sloths. Decades of field research followed the initial fossil discoveries onsite, headlined by the 1962–63 “Big Dig”—at the time the largest interdisciplinary scientific expedition of its kind. Formally announced in 2017 through the state's “Explore Your Nevada Initiative,” the site ties open wash country directly to its prehistoric and scientific history.
