Hugel Plays an Open-Air Set on the Navy Pier Lakefront

Hugel built his name on house records that borrow from Latin and Afro rhythms rather than the standard four-on-the-floor template — tracks like Morena and the Bella Ciao rework moved through European clubs before they reached American festival stages. His sets run warmer and slower than most main-stage house, with long percussion passages where the drop keeps getting postponed. It reads better in daylight than it does at two in the morning.

The concert space sits at the east end of the pier, with Lake Michigan on three sides and the skyline behind the stage. Sound carries differently out here — the low end drifts over open water instead of bouncing off walls, so the mix stays clearer from the back than it would in a room of the same size. Boats anchor just past the barrier and stay for the whole set, which is a Chicago summer image that does not really exist anywhere else.

The set starts at 4:00 PM, so most of it runs in daylight and the skyline lights come up toward the end. Wind off the lake makes the pier noticeably cooler than the Loop — a layer is worth carrying even on a warm September day. Navy Pier's garages fill early on weekends; the free trolley from Grand Avenue on the Red Line runs every fifteen minutes and skips the Illinois Street backup entirely.
