Description

Across 241 acres, the preserve’s plant life grows out of an ancient, uplifted ocean basin. Exposed bands of interbedded chert and shale create lean, nutrient-poor ground where pioneering chaparral takes hold, while fractured rock underneath stores water for deep roots. Shaded trails wind through ongoing succession as bay laurels and live oaks gradually filter light over chamise and manzanita, sustaining a year-round display of blossoming plants across quiet, rocky knolls.
