Houston Civic Art Collection | Astronaut John Glenn
attraction
A stainless-steel sculpture where capsule-shaped perforations filter light to form a portrait of astronaut John Glenn.
Description

The installation honors John Glenn, the third American in space and the first to orbit Earth in the Friendship 7 Mercury spacecraft. Capsule shapes perforate the panels in varying sizes for light and darkness to pass through. Designed as a collaboration between artist Randy Twaddle, architect Ron Witte, and Metalab, the work was donated to the City of Houston in 2012 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Glenn's orbits.
