Description

Extended across the San Antonio River in 1851 and named for Sam Houston, the street soon stood as a direct rival to Commerce Street. Commercial and residential buildings lined the corridor through the 1880s, propelled by the arrival of the city's early streetcar routes. When community leaders began turning the overgrown, flood-prone river into a linear park in the early 1900s, Houston Street property owners were among the first to open their buildings to face the water.
