historic Burdines department store
4.8 (4)attraction
Faint traces of the Burdines sign still linger on the downtown flagship of the chain once known as 'The Florida Store'.
Description

Founded in 1898 by William M. and John Burdine, the business evolved from a carriage trade shop into a department store chain that operated exclusively in Florida. Its downtown Miami flagship was built in stages from the 1910s through the 1930s, decorated with pink and blue paint, subtropical motifs, and palm trees in the center of the store. After decades of operation, the building closed as Macy's in 2018 and reopened as a Ross Dress for Less in 2020, remembered today as a nostalgic landmark of Miami's classic retail era.
