Grieg’s first Peer Gynt opens with the clean tranquillity of Morning before culminating in the hero’s escape from the Mountain King. The performance pairs Shostakovich’s darkly glittering Cello Concerto No. 1, performed by Russian cellist Anastasia Kobekina, with Haydn’s joyful 97th Symphony.
