Harvard Art Museums: Free Art, Then a Basement of Used Books
A free museum afternoon, a five-minute walk, then a basement of used books to dig through.
Harvard Art Museums to Harvard Book Store
🖼️ Walk in without paying
Admission at the Harvard Art Museums is free for everyone, every day the doors open. The only stop before the galleries is the Visitor Services desk for a quick check-in, and walk-ins are welcome with no ticket to book. The museum closes on Mondays, along with a short list of holidays and maintenance days on its hours page; check that page before you set out.

📚 Head downstairs for used copies
At 1256 Massachusetts Avenue, five minutes from Quincy Street, Harvard Book Store has been selling books since 1932. The used stock sits in the basement, thousands of copies across literature, children's books, other languages, history, art, architecture, religion and science. Doors open at 9 a.m. Monday to Saturday and close at 10 p.m.; Sunday runs 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Set aside more time downstairs than upstairs.

🗺️ Put the two together
Start at the Red Line's Harvard station: the museum is a five-minute walk from the station, and the bookstore is five minutes on from there, which leaves the day needing no car and no admission ticket. Any day from Tuesday to Sunday works for both stops; only Monday shuts a door. Harvard Art Museums at Night is a dated program, not regular Thursday hours: on selected Thursday evenings the museum opens 5 to 9 p.m. for art, music and food, and the museum calendar lists the exact dates. One afternoon, no admission, two blocks.
