Hana's Black Sand for Lunch, a Waterfall Stop Heading Back

A Mercedes van day on the Road to Hana that saves the black-sand picnic for the far end and a waterfall stop for the drive home.

Stardust Hawaii runs the Road to Hana as an out-and-back day in a Mercedes Sprinter van, with up to 14 guests and one driver who also does the narrating. The road has several hundred curves and more than fifty one-lane bridges, and you never take the wheel. Most of the waterfalls go past the window on the way out; the picnic comes at the far end and a waterfall stop on the drive home.

The booking covers the van, the driver-guide, entry at Waiʻānapanapa State Park and a picnic lunch, and one per-person price applies to every age band, children included. Hotel pickup covers select properties only.

What Stops, and What Only Goes Past the Window

The operator's own route list is specific about this. On the way out the van stops at Hoʻokipa, where the listing says green sea turtles feed along the shoreline, and on the Keʻanae peninsula, home of Aunty Sandy's banana bread stand. Twin Falls, Haipuaʻena and the Three Bears falls at Upper Waikani are pass-bys on that list. Coming back, there are short stops at the Wailua Valley lookout and a stand of rainbow eucalyptus.

The order can bend. One guide in March 2026 skipped the turtle stop on the way up because it was too early and made it on the return. The listing also lets the driver swap Aunty Sandy's for Hana Farms when there is a closure or a long wait. Reviewers prone to carsickness mention Dramamine or ginger chews before setting off, and one in March 2026 warns that the curves are no joke.

Lunch on Black Sand, If the Park Is Open

The operator's route puts lunch at Waiʻānapanapa State Park, the black-sand beach just outside Hana town, and three guests between February and June 2026 describe eating there. Hana town itself is a drive-through on that list. The listing gives the park about an hour and Puaʻa Kaʻa falls about forty minutes on the way back, and lists swimming at both when the weather allows. The state parks page for Puaʻa Kaʻa State Wayside, however, lists swimming among its prohibited activities and warns of flash floods and submerged objects, so plan on taking in those falls from the bank. At Waiʻānapanapa, swimming is one of the listed activities, along with warnings for dangerous shorebreak and strong current.

The park is outside the operator's control. As of the state parks notice of October 13, 2026, it had reopened on September 29 after the recovery from Hurricanes Nolo and Lowell, and the listing reserves the right to swap in Red Sand Beach or a comparable stop if access is unavailable. Entry to the park is included in the booking. If you plan to get in the water at Waiʻānapanapa, wear a swimsuit under your clothes and bring a towel and a change.

A Pastry Early, a Deli Sandwich at Lunch

Breakfast is a pastry on board early, and lunch is a picnic of deli sandwiches, ham, turkey or veggie, with snacks, water and Hawaiian cane juice. You name your sandwich in the special requirements box at booking. There is no other menu, so raw, vegan and allergy diets mean bringing your own food.

Reviewers range from 'wasn't too bad' to 'premade convenience store type' on the sandwiches, and a July 2026 guest suggests snacks if your pickup is early. Coffee is not on the inclusions list; another July guest, picked up at 5:45 AM, bought coffee and banana bread at a fruit stand around 10:45. Fruit-stand produce is for buying your own as well.

Pickup Is Set by Phone, and It Can Change

The listing says a booking is not confirmed until the operator calls to set up pickup, so give a phone number you will answer, and put your hotel and email in the special requirements box. Hotel pickup covers select properties only. Guests staying in Napili, Kahana or Kapalua meet the van at Lahaina Cannery Mall at 6:00 AM, and guests in Makawao, Kula or Paia meet it at the Kahului park-and-ride at 6:40 AM. The third meeting point is the Maʻalaea park-and-ride at 6:30 AM.

Two reviews posted in January 2026 describe being told after booking to get to a parking lot on their own, one a few days ahead and one after a last-minute reschedule. Keep a way to reach a park-and-ride even if your hotel is on the list.

The pin marks Waiʻānapanapa State Park, the black-sand lunch stop; pickups happen at hotels or at the three meeting points above. The day runs about nine to ten hours depending on traffic.

The van is not wheelchair accessible, and every guest has to manage its low step without the driver's help; canes are allowed, walking sticks are not. The listing does not recommend the tour for travelers with poor cardiovascular health, and children need their own car seat or booster. Cancel at least 24 hours ahead for a full refund, and plan the driver's tip outside the ticket, 15 to 20 percent recommended.

On the drive home the van passes the Three Bears falls a second time.
