Take a 90-Minute Surf Lesson in Santa Monica

A 90-minute beginner surf lesson at Santa Monica State Beach, with 30 minutes on sand and one hour in the water.

Book a beginner surf lesson in Santa Monica.

Kapowui runs its Santa Monica lessons to a fixed shape. The first thirty minutes happen on dry sand, covering board design, wave behavior, ocean safety, surf etiquette and the pop-up itself. Only then does anyone carry a board down to the water.

The remaining hour belongs to the water, with an instructor alongside. The school publishes that split on two separate pages of its own site, which makes it a ratio you can plan around.

Equipment comes with the booking. Board, wetsuit and instructor are included, along with sunscreen, drinking water and a souvenir. The listing puts the age range at six to seventy, asks for a moderate level of fitness, and carries an average of 4.97 across 146 reviews of this lesson.

One booking takes up to fifteen travelers. The beach is wheelchair accessible and service animals are allowed. Anyone booking for a child, or for someone with a medical condition or who cannot swim, is asked to say so at the time of reservation.

A Solo Lesson Is a Coin Flip Until You Ask

The school is direct about this on its own pages. A solo booking that says nothing extra ends up private roughly half the time, and weekends are the tightest. When a lesson does get combined, Kapowui says it pairs single bookers only with other single bookers of similar age, fitness and ability.

There is a lever, and it sits in the reservation notes. The school asks anyone who needs a private lesson, or a particular instructor, to write it there, and puts the odds of that request being honored at about ninety-nine percent while stopping short of a guarantee.

The Vans Are Parked at the South End of Lot 5

Lessons meet in Lot 5 South, the city beach lot on Barnard Way at the southern end of Santa Monica State Beach. Look for the yellow and orange VW vans near the public restrooms at the far south end of the lot. Kapowui describes this site as open year round with several instructors working, which sets it apart from its Venice location and that one's June to September season.

Two things about getting there. The lot charges for parking under the city code posted at its entrance, and that sits outside the lesson price. Kapowui also asks people to arrive five minutes early and warns that lessons run back to back. A late arrival eats into the ninety minutes.

What the Water Asks of You

The listing sets a moderate fitness bar and advises against the lesson for pregnant travelers and for anyone with poor cardiovascular health. Ages run from six to seventy.

Kapowui adds a rule of its own, in plain language: anyone who turns up intoxicated, hungover included, has the lesson canceled. The school also weighs tide and swell when it schedules, and says it may suggest a different time for a lesson that needs closer attention.

The Twenty-Four Hour Line, and What Sits Inside It

Both sides state the same cancellation terms, which is worth knowing before you build a day around this.

  • A full refund requires canceling at least twenty-four hours before the start time.
  • Rescheduling inside that window counts as a cancellation. Moving a lesson to a different time on the same day counts the same way.
  • Online booking closes twelve hours before the start time.
  • Reservation times are Pacific.

Tipping is not required. Kapowui says it is appreciated and leaves it at that.

The promise the school makes is a plain one, repeated on its instructor page: it says it will have you up and riding waves. The Santa Monica site stays in service all twelve months, which makes a January lesson as ordinary here as a July one. You walk back to the same lot you parked in, ninety minutes later.
