Ground Zero with a Guide Who Lived Through That Day
A 90-minute walk of the memorial plaza, led by a New Yorker who lived through 9/11. The museum is an optional add-on.
Most people reach the memorial plaza already knowing the outline of what happened here. What the plaza leaves out is the texture. Which building stood where. How the neighborhood emptied, and what the months afterward looked like for the people who stayed.
ExperienceFirst staffs this walk with guides who were in New York on September 11, 2001, and the account comes first-hand. Groups cap at 15, close enough for questions to get answered in a normal voice.
The route stays above ground, on the plaza and the streets around it. Entry to the museum below is sold separately and chosen at booking.

The reviews that carry any detail tend to name the guide rather than the route. Jodi, writing in June 2025, said her guide Arun "has such a heart-full and thoughtful way about him and great knowledge as he relates his personal experience."
That pattern holds across 7,101 combined Viator and Tripadvisor reviews, which average 4.8 out of 5 for this listing specifically.
Three booking options sit behind the single listing. They differ mainly in how much time you spend underground.

The two pools sit in the footprints of the north and south towers, and the water falls into a center square that never fills.
The names on the bronze parapets are not alphabetical. They are grouped by who people were with that morning, the crew of one firehouse, colleagues off a single floor, strangers who shared their last minutes. The memorial calls this arrangement meaningful adjacencies, and nearly all of the roughly 1,200 requests from next of kin were honored in the final layout. The victims of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing are recorded here as well.
About 75 minutes of the walk happens on this plaza. The Survivor Tree stands here too, a Callery pear recovered from the rubble and replanted.
The Museum Decision

The museum sits below the plaza, and entry is not included unless it is added at booking. Two upgrades exist:
- Skip-the-line ticket, self-guided. You enter on a timed window.
- VIP tour, about an hour with a docent through the collection.
Both let you stay as long as you want once inside, and the guided hour sets up the collection instead of capping the visit.
The timed window on the self-guided ticket is firm. The museum reserves the right to deny admission to anyone who misses it. Security runs airport-style at the entrance, and large bags have to be checked.
Who Is Actually Leading This
ExperienceFirst opened in New York in 2009, after founder Andrew Luan was asked by a visiting friend for a tour of Wall Street. Ground Zero was among the first routes the company added. It now runs walks in Barcelona, Dallas, Los Angeles, Paris, Rome and San Francisco.
For this route the hiring filter is narrow. Guides were in the city that day, and the walk is built around what they remember rather than a script. Reagan, in July 2025, described a guide named Sean as "incredibly knowledgeable and sensitive with such important stories."
Gratuities sit outside the ticket.
Finding the Start
📍 The group forms inside the Oculus, the ribbed white transit hall beside the memorial, at the L'Arte del Gelato stand on the main level.
Look for the orange hat. A concierge in the same orange, holding an orange sign, is in place 15 minutes before departure, and museum tickets are handed over there.
Departures run on time. There is no refund for a missed one. Treat the 15-minute mark as the real arrival time.
- Cancellation: full refund when canceled at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure.
- Access: step-free throughout, and the route works for wheelchairs, strollers and service animals.
- Pace: a moderate amount of walking on pavement, suitable for all fitness levels.
- Weather: the plaza is entirely outdoors. Bring layers in the cold months.
- Children three and under join free alongside a paid adult.
- Tickets are mobile or paper, one per booking.
- Tours run in English.
The walk ends on the memorial plaza, a few minutes on foot from the transit hall where it began.
