Description

Historically known as the Crommelin House, the Great Falls Tavern once serviced cargo and excursion boats passing through Lock 20 on their run between Georgetown and Cumberland. From 1831 it took in canal travelers as a hotel and hosted late 19th-century community gatherings, tied to the inland trade route George Washington envisioned for American commerce. Today the building operates as a C&O Canal National Historical Park hub, pairing canal history and ranger programs with easy access to the canal towpath.
