Preserved Civil War earthworks where U.S. Colored Troops mounted a fierce assault during the 1864 Battle of Nashville.
Description

On Polk Avenue, the crescent-shaped outwork anchored the Confederate line's far right on December 15, 1864, during the opening engagement of the Battle of Nashville. Manned by General Hiram B. Granbury's brigade and General Benjamin Franklin Cheatham's corps, the position took the charge of Union forces that included the 1st and 2nd Colored Brigades of the United States Colored Troops.
Today, surviving earth walls and an infantry ditch trace the fortification's layout, maintained by the Gen. Joseph E. Johnston Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The grounds also feature a Metro Historical Commission marker commemorating the role of African-American troops in the fighting.
